About Main Street Consulting

Main Street Consulting was founded by Michael D. Hayes, a strategist and consultant who has spent 35 years honing the art of relationship building.

Mike's career began in a small town in Michigan, where he got his first job at a Main Street address.  Over the years his Main Street roots have remained strong.  His first professional role out of college was as a probation and parole agent that was soon followed by election as the Midland County Clerk.  As a key player in Midland County government, his political career was launched on that same downtown street.

For eight years, Mike represented the needs of Main Street as a member of the Michigan House of Representatives (1981-1988).  After leaving his elected position, he spent the next 20 years (1988-2008) strategically leading and counseling The Dow Chemical Company on how to manage the politics of various Main Streets all over the world.

As an active member of his neighborhood, area and region, Mike has made it his life's work to engage with the needs of people in various roles, communities and time zones to achieve their mutual goals.  He is an expert at getting things done by bringing people together.

Michael D. Hayes

Michael D. (Mike) Hayes founded Main Street Consulting, specializing in community relations and government affairs, following his recent retirement as vice president of Executive Relations for The Dow Chemical Company.  Hayes also serves as the vice president and secretary of the Michigan Baseball Foundation Board of Directors.

His responsibilities at Dow included management of community, business, and governmental relationships at the executive level for Dow's global headquarters.

Hayes joined Dow in 1989 in Public Affairs and later that year was named manager of State Government Affairs for Dow Plastics.  Hayes went on to serve as director, State Policy and Industry Relations, and was responsible for Dow's interface with state governments in the U.S.  In 1997, he assumed additional responsibilities for Industry Relations, leading Dow interactions with Trade and Business Associations globally.  While serving in this capacity, Hayes initiated and led the efforts to develop a re-branding of the chemical industry to one built on the benefits of chemistry.

He was named Vice President for Global Plastics Issues and Industry Affairs in 2001, and went on to be named Vice President of Global Public Affairs for Public Policy and Advocacy in 2004.  From 2004 to 2006, Hayes established Government Affairs capability for Dow in mainland China, as well as India.  In addition, Dow's management of public issues was streamlined and the company's political profile was greatly enhanced.

Prior to his employment with Dow, Hayes served four terms as a State Representative in the Michigan Legislature.

Hayes presently serves as a member of the Michigan Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and is immediate past-chair of the Midland Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.  He also serves as a member of Midland Downtown Development Authority Board, Midland Tomorrow Board, Saginaw Valley State University Foundation Board, and the Board of Directors of the Great Lakes Bay Region Alliance.  Mike is a Rotarian and a Paul Harris Fellow.

Hayes has been recognized with the Distinguished Alumnus Award by Central Michigan University where he earned his BS and MS degrees.  Midland Tomorrow awarded Hayes the annual Community Partner Award in 2008 in recognition of his success at bringing together private sector, government, and community leaders for economic development.
